Ukraine's Representation in European Tournaments for 2026/27

Ukraine has retained its quota of four teams in European competitions for the 2026/27 season: Shakhtar Donetsk, Dynamo Kyiv, LNZ Cherkasy, and Polissya Zhytomyr. The Ukrainian Premier League champion, Shakhtar, will compete in the Champions League, while the Ukrainian Cup winner, Dynamo, heads to the Europa League. The silver and bronze medalists of the UPL, LNZ and Polissya, will participate in the Conference League. Notably, three of these four clubs must navigate through qualifying rounds. This marks a continued presence for Ukrainian football on the continental stage despite ongoing challenges.

As the Premier League titleholder, Shakhtar Donetsk automatically qualifies for the main group stage of the 2026/27 Champions League. During the draw, Shakhtar will be placed in the third pot. In the previous two editions, teams needed to accumulate 10-11 points to advance past the Champions League group stage.

Dynamo Kyiv, winners of the Ukrainian Cup, will enter the first qualifying round of the Europa League on July 9 and 16. The Europa League features four qualifying rounds spread over seven weeks. The start of the Ukrainian Premier League season is tentatively set for August 1.

Ukrainian Clubs' Path in European Competitions

LNZ Cherkasy and Polissya Zhytomyr will begin their campaigns in the second qualifying round of the Conference League. Both teams will be unseeded in this round, with matches scheduled for July 23 and 30.

As a result, Ukrainian clubs have the chance to showcase their strength on the European stage, maintaining representation across all three major continental tournaments.

Securing these spots for Ukrainian clubs is vital for the country's football development, as it allows teams to gain international experience and raise their competitive level. Strong performances in European competitions can also boost the sport's popularity in Ukraine and attract new sponsors.

Given that three out of four teams must go through qualification, their journey to success will demand serious preparation and significant effort.

As Ukrainian clubs gear up for their European campaigns, the upcoming changes in tournament formats could significantly impact their strategies and performances. Understanding the overhaul of the Nations League and Euro qualification can provide insights into how these alterations may affect Ukrainian teams in their quest for continental success.
