Ukraine Set to Keep Dominant Position in Global Sunflower Oil Market
Industry forecasts for the 2025/2026 marketing year indicate Ukraine will maintain its status as the world's leading producer and exporter of sunflower oil. The country's production is projected to reach 4.3 million tons, with exports expected to be around 4.1 million tons, demonstrating the sector's resilience. This dominance is crucial for global food supply chains, as Ukraine is a primary supplier to many nations.
Export data shows Ukraine had already shipped nearly 1.4 million tons of sunflower oil by January 1, 2026, leaving 2.7 million tons to be exported within the year. Over the first four months of the current marketing year, monthly exports averaged 342,000 tons. The forecast suggests a stable pace will continue, with an average of 338,000 tons projected for each of the following eight months.
Military Strikes Impact Production Infrastructure
Despite the positive outlook, the industry has faced significant disruptions from military attacks on key infrastructure. Strikes targeted the 'Pivdennyi' port on December 22, followed by an attack on the Illichivsk oil and fat processing plant on December 25. Subsequently, on January 5, the Dnipropetrovsk oil extraction plant was hit, resulting in a spill of 300 tons of oil at the Bunge facility.
Even with these substantial challenges, production and export forecasts remain robust, underscoring Ukraine's critical role in the global vegetable oil market. The agricultural sector continues to be a pillar of the national economy under extremely difficult conditions.
This forecast highlights the vital importance of the agricultural sector to Ukraine's economy, particularly amidst ongoing conflict. The sustained high levels of production and export testify to the resilience of Ukrainian agri-producers and the country's potential to remain a key global market player. Successfully meeting these export targets could significantly bolster foreign currency earnings and support broader economic development.
