Vladimir Ogiyevsky’s Legacy Celebrated

On May 11, 2023, Ukraine marks the 136th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Vasilyevich Ogiyevsky, a pioneering radio engineer. Born in the town of Krapivna (now a village in the Shchyokinsky District of Tula Oblast, Russia), Ogiyevsky played a transformative role in building Ukraine’s radio network. He was the architect of the USSR’s earliest radio communication and broadcasting systems, and he founded a renowned scientific and technical school for radio engineering and electronics in Kyiv. His work laid the groundwork for modern telecommunications in the region.

Ogiyevsky became a full professor in 1930. His radio engineering laboratory at the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute later evolved into the faculty of radio engineering. In 1925, that lab housed the USSR’s first amateur collective radio station, R1KPI, where Ogiyevsky personally conducted the first two-way radio communication session. He passed away on February 26, 1979, in Kyiv, leaving behind a lasting imprint on radio technology and education.

Ogiyevsky’s Enduring Impact

This anniversary highlights Ogiyevsky’s critical role in advancing radio engineering science in Ukraine and shaping modern communication technologies. His legacy continues through academic institutions and ongoing research in the field, opening new doors for young professionals. His achievements remain a cornerstone of Ukrainian scientific and technical history.
