Ukrainians Set Daily Record with 8,000 Cubic Meters of Firewood Purchased

Українці придбали рекордну кількість дров за один день - 8,000 кубометрів.

Surge in Firewood Demand Across Ukraine

On January 21, Ukrainians purchased a record 8,000 cubic meters of firewood in a single day, the highest daily volume recorded this year. This quantity is enough to fill nearly one thousand standard cargo trucks. The spike in demand is driven by a severe cold snap, while harvesting operations continue to secure necessary supplies for the population. The state enterprise 'Forests of Ukraine' currently holds over 200,000 cubic meters of firewood in its warehouses, providing a significant strategic reserve. This reliance on wood for heating has increased due to the ongoing war's impact on energy infrastructure.

Firewood is available at nearly all local forestry units, which helps meet the rising demand. The government has pledged that the price for households will remain fixed until the end of the heating season, a measure aimed at preventing fuel poverty. Furthermore, Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers has temporarily banned the export of unprocessed timber, a move likely intended to stabilize the domestic market and prioritize local needs.

War's Toll on Timber Harvesting

Ukraine's timber harvesting capacity has been significantly reduced since Russia's full-scale invasion. A substantial portion of forested areas is now under temporary occupation or has been damaged by military actions. In response, the Verkhovna Rada has passed a draft law regulating the storage of firewood without proper documentation. The proposed law permits the storage of up to 30 cubic meters of pine or 15 cubic meters of oak firewood, though it awaits the President's signature to come into force.

Yuriy Bolokhovets noted that 'all requests for firewood from military units, submitted through the proper channels, are being fulfilled.'

The growing demand for firewood during the cold weather underscores the critical need to ensure the population has access to energy sources, especially given the instability in the supply of other fuels. The export ban on raw timber and the substantial reserves held by 'Forests of Ukraine' are measures designed to stabilize the market and meet public needs this winter. Concurrently, new legislative initiatives concerning firewood storage aim to bring order to this vital sector amidst the challenges of war and disrupted forestry operations.
