In a TikTok video, Ukrainian user Karina Tsymbuk shared her insights on the stark contrasts in service culture between France and Ukraine. She highlighted significant differences in how staff interact with guests, their knowledge of the menu, and the general rules of conduct for employees in these two countries.
Karina pointed out that in Ukraine, waitstaff are required to have an in-depth knowledge of the menu, including details on gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, and vegetarian options, as well as potential allergens. In France, however, the scene is quite different, with waiters sometimes smoking right on the summer terrace or near the entrance to the establishment. This contrast reveals deeper social norms and distinct service cultures. Such differences are common across Europe, where dining etiquette and customer expectations can vary dramatically from one nation to another.
A Comparison of Service Rules
Karina also noted that in France, if you order a coffee to go and then decide to sit down inside the cafe, a waiter might ask you to leave. This underscores a certain rigidity in French service protocols.
"If you want a smoke break, you go behind the restaurant so no one sees you. We do many things with gloves or tongs. Even if a guest has a problem and acts like a crazy Chihuahua or the director of this world, you still have to be as loyal to them as possible,"she remarked.
Further comparing attitudes toward service, Karina mentioned that previously, customers could easily clarify order details with a waiter, but now many people don't even try.
"For example, I don't like tomato sauce, and my friend is a vegan. Before, we could ask the waiter about such things, but now we don't even attempt it. Overall, I like the existence of a balance between the comfort of the worker and the guest, not just catering exclusively to the latter,"she added.
It's worth noting that alongside Karina, other Ukrainian women living abroad, such as Polina Faustova in Spain and Yulia in Canada, also have their own impressions of service in different countries.
