Ukrainian Potatoes Nearly Triple the Price of Egyptian Imports

Ціни на українську картоплю значно зросли в порівнянні з єгипетськими постачаннями.

Pricing for Early Potatoes in Ukraine

Early potatoes have appeared in Kyiv supermarkets, with both imported and domestic options available. Egyptian imports are priced at 38.99 UAH per kg, while Ukrainian potatoes are offered at a promotional price of 79.99 UAH per kg, with a regular price of 114 UAH per kg. Kyiv resident Oleksandr Retyvov noticed this price gap and questioned, 'Why is that?'

Experts attribute the high cost of Ukrainian potatoes to growing conditions. Roman Serdyuk noted that Ukrainian early potatoes were cultivated in greenhouses reliant on generators due to insufficient sunlight during winter. 'A greenhouse doesn't heat itself,' he emphasized. Oleksandr Retyvov added that this explains why 'a spoonful of mashed potatoes spread on a plate' costs more than McDonald's fries, as the latter is also prepared in Ukraine.

Trends in Potato Imports to Ukraine

In 2025, Ukraine's potato imports reached 123,600 tons, more than double the previous year's figures. In monetary terms, imports grew 2.5 times to $66.3 million. Ukrainian potato exports totaled 3,400 tons, valued at $812,000. These changes were reported by the publication Glavkom.

Some experts suggest that taste also influences pricing. Yevgen Korniyevsky believes Ukrainian potatoes are tastier, though less abundant, while in Egypt 'it's sunny all year, and labor costs are lower.' Anzhelika Grabovska added that Ukrainian early potatoes, even greenhouse-grown, have not yet reached full maturity. 'Most likely, where it says Ukraine, that's the distributor,' she noted.

According to Natalia Zakharchuk, senior researcher at the Institute of Potato Farming of NAAS, Ukrainian potato breeding took a different path. She emphasized that since potatoes are a staple food, special attention was paid to taste. 'In Ukraine, consumer taste preferences are a priority,' she stated, noting that in Europe up to 80% of potatoes are consumed in processed form.

Regarding variety diversity, popular ultra-early types include:

  • Tiras
  • Slauta

Experts recommend considering the varieties Rostavytsia, Myroslava, Fotynia, and Knyahynia for autumn-winter consumption.

The rise in potato imports to Ukraine reflects shifts in consumer preferences and market conditions. Meanwhile, the price comparison between Ukrainian and imported potatoes highlights the importance of quality and cultivation methods in shaping pricing policies. These factors could influence future market trends, including consumer choices and producer strategies.

As the price disparity between local and imported potatoes continues to draw attention, it raises questions about the broader implications for consumers.
