Major Ballistic Missile Assault on Kyiv and Its Surroundings

Russia launched one of its largest ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region since the war began. In his evening address marking the 1,607th day of the conflict, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the enemy had spent several days preparing the assault by stockpiling missiles. Over the course of the day, Ukrainian air defense forces managed to shoot down 18 missiles and neutralize more than a hundred drones. Despite these efforts, however, the attack damaged over a hundred structures in the capital and the region.

Regional Impact Across Ukraine

Zelenskyy also noted that strikes were recorded not only in Kyiv but also in Kharkiv, Sumy Oblast, Donetsk Oblast, and Kherson. In this context, he held discussions with military commanders, including:

  • Lieutenant General Mykhailo Drapatyi, Commander of the Joint Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,
  • Major General Volodymyr Horbatiuk, Deputy Chief of the General Staff,
  • Major General Oleh Apostol, Commander of the Air Assault Forces.

The talks focused on the situation in Sumy, Kharkiv, Luhansk, and Donetsk regions, as well as the active operations of the Air Assault Forces in the Oleksandrivka direction.

'Russia is betting on ballistic missiles, and it is precisely because of these missiles that Putin still believes in his war,' Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated.

He also stressed the importance of partners understanding the real situation: 'It is very important that our partners understand what is happening and that we need anti-missile systems to protect lives literally every day.' The president emphasized the need for swift action: 'We cannot afford to waste a single day in defending Ukraine's independence, our positions, and our people.'

With the constant threat from ballistic missiles, the situation remains critical, and Ukrainian forces continue working to strengthen their defensive capabilities.

This latest escalation shows that Russia persists in using ballistic missiles as its primary means of warfare, endangering civilian infrastructure across Ukraine. While Ukraine's air defense efforts demonstrate some effectiveness, they require continued support from international partners to improve defensive capacity. Recent events underscore the importance of unity and rapid response to threats that have persisted for over 1,600 days.

In light of the recent missile strikes, President Zelenskyy has also announced a new strategy aimed at intensifying pressure on Russia through enhanced drone operations. This initiative is part of a broader effort to counter the escalating threat posed by ballistic missiles.
