Ukrainian Tennis Star's Sharp Criticism
At the Australian Open, Ukrainian tennis player Oleksandra Oliynykova launched a strong critique against Russian and Belarusian athletes, accusing them of supporting the dictators Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko. She highlighted the grim reality of life in Ukraine, where war and explosions are a daily occurrence.
"I have woken up to the sound of explosions. Do you think that's normal? I don't," stated Oliynykova.
Involvement in Propaganda Events
During a press conference, Oliynykova pointed to specific athletes whose actions, she argued, violate International Olympic Committee (IOC) guidelines by participating in propaganda events. Her examples included:
- Aryna Sabalenka, who signed a letter supporting Lukashenko in 2020;
- Diana Shnaider, who was personally awarded by Vladimir Putin.
Oliynykova stressed that such actions constitute support for aggressive regimes. Her comments reflect the deep political divisions that have entered international sports since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
She also cited Aleksandra Sasnovich, who attended Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly on February 29, 2024, emphasizing that backing such leaders should not go unnoticed.
"Lukashenko is her president," Oliynykova added.
Oliynykova warned that involvement in such events could have serious repercussions for an athlete's reputation on the global stage. Her statement underscores the complex moral and political challenges athletes now face, where personal beliefs increasingly collide with the expectations of international sporting bodies.
