Oliynykova Pulls Out of WTA 500 Event
Ukrainian tennis star Alexandra Oliynykova has withdrawn from the round of 16 at the WTA 500 tournament in Strasbourg due to a right hip injury. Her performance in earlier rounds had been strong—she defeated Ksenia Yefremova and Yulia Putintseva in qualifying to secure her first-ever spot in a WTA main draw through the qualifying rounds.
In the first round, Oliynykova beat Philippine player Alexandra Eala. However, during that match, she sustained the right hip injury. In the second round, facing Czech opponent Marie Bouzková, she was unable to continue, retiring with the score at 1-3. This left Bouzková leading 3-1, and Oliynykova was forced to exit the tournament.
Next Up: Roland Garros
Oliynykova's next challenge will be Roland Garros, where she will join other Ukrainian players. Ukraine will be represented by seven athletes in the main draw of this Grand Slam event:
- Elina Svitolina
- Marta Kostyuk
- Dayana Yastremska
- Yulia Starodubtseva
- Daria Snigur
- Anhelina Kalinina
- Alexandra Oliynykova
The main draw matches at Roland Garros will take place from May 24 to June 7.
This tournament is a key milestone in Oliynykova's career, offering her the chance to compete at the Grand Slam level she has been preparing for, despite her injury. Notably, the strong Ukrainian presence at such a prestigious event highlights the growing popularity of tennis in Ukraine and boosts national sports on the international stage, especially amid the country's challenging circumstances. While her withdrawal from the WTA 500 could affect her preparation for upcoming competitions, she now has an opportunity to recover and regroup before Roland Garros.
Despite her recent withdrawal from the WTA 500 tournament, Oliynkova's achievement of securing a main draw spot in Strasbourg marks a significant milestone in her burgeoning career. This accomplishment, alongside her determination to recover, sets the stage for her participation in the upcoming Roland Garros, where she aims to showcase her skills at the Grand Slam level.
