Oleksandra Oliynykova and the Kastus Kalinouski Regiment Patch Controversy
Ukrainian tennis player Oleksandra Oliynykova has revealed that she was formally instructed to remove a patch representing the Kastus Kalinouski Regiment during her match at the French Open. She explained that while she had to take off the patch—a gift from her father’s comrades-in-arms—she kept it in her pocket. Oliynykova secured a victory over Russia’s Yelena Pridankina with a score of 6:1, 6:2, marking her first win in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. Her next match is scheduled for May 28 against Australian player Kimberly Birrell.
Oliynykova shared the removal demand in a dedicated video posted on Instagram. She emphasized the emotional weight of symbols and what the patch represents to her:
“These people are currently fighting for an independent Europe and standing shoulder to shoulder with our Ukrainian heroes to push back Russian aggression. But I want everyone to know that this spot is reserved for this patch, which means so much to me. And during the match, it’s right here, in my pocket. It’s always with me. So once again, a huge thank you. And I want you to know that despite this demand, the meaning and the symbols remain with me.” — Oleksandra Oliynykova
The History of the Kastus Kalinouski Regiment
The Kastus Kalinouski Regiment was initially formed as a battalion in March 2022 from Belarusian volunteers and took part in the battles for Bucha, Irpin, and Vorzel. In May 2022, the unit’s commander announced the creation of the Kalinouski Regiment within the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The regiment includes the Litvin and Volat battalions, and its fighters have participated in the liberation of the Kherson region, battles on the Zaporizhzhia front, and in Bakhmut. The regiment continues to operate in the Donetsk region.
At the French Open, Elina Svitolina has also advanced to the third round after defeating Spain’s Kaitlin Quevedo. Meanwhile, Daria Snigur was eliminated in the second round after losing to American player Peyton Stearns.
This situation highlights not only the personal significance of the patch for Oliynykova but also the broader context of the fight for freedom and independence involving Ukrainians and their allies. The demand to remove the patch reflects the political realities that athletes face on the international stage, drawing further attention to ongoing events in Ukraine. Like many other sports figures, Oliynykova is using her platform to show support for those fighting on the front lines.
Following her recent victory, Oleksandra Oliynykova is set to compete again, this time at the upcoming tournament in Strasbourg.
