Ukrainian Robots Capture a Russian Strongpoint

In a milestone for modern warfare, Ukrainian ground-based robotic units have successfully taken a Russian position on the front lines. Jacob Parakilas, an analyst at the RAND Corporation, cautions that while this achievement is significant, it is far too early to predict a wholesale replacement of human soldiers by machines. Several major hurdles still block the widespread deployment of these robotic systems:

  • terrain obstacles;
  • vulnerability to electronic warfare (EW);
  • limited autonomy.

Robots on the Battlefield

The conflict has now been raging for four years, and during this time Ukrainian units have increasingly turned to unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) for a variety of missions. These robots are now being used for tasks such as:

  • evacuating wounded soldiers;
  • transporting ammunition;
  • engineering work;
  • laying and clearing mines.

Most of these platforms run on wheels or tracks, giving them a degree of mobility. However, they remain highly vulnerable to enemy fire, as opposing forces can strike any moving target within a 20-kilometer radius.

Parakilas highlights two critical obstacles that hinder the effective integration of robotic systems:

  • rough terrain that can block or slow down robot movement;
  • the challenging electromagnetic environment these machines must operate in.

Although fiber-optic cables used for control are immune to electronic jamming, they limit operational range and are prone to snapping due to shrapnel or uneven ground. At present, robot autonomy remains only partial, further complicating their use in dynamic combat scenarios.

In short, while ground robots are already being deployed on the front, their role remains largely supportive. Any fundamental shift in combat tactics will likely take considerable time to materialize.
