How Ukrainian F-16 Pilots Train to Fly Without GPS Under Russian Electronic Warfare Threats

Підготовка українських пілотів F-16 до умов бойових дій без глобальної навігації в умовах електронних загроз з боку ворога.

Training Ukrainian Pilots for F-16 Fighter Operations

Ukrainian pilots preparing to fly F-16 fighter jets are learning to navigate without relying on GPS due to the risk of Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems that can jam navigation equipment. This training takes place in the United Kingdom, where over 50 Ukrainian pilots have already completed basic instruction. The information was officially reported by Glavkom, citing Business Insider.

Adapting to Combat Conditions

To adapt to real combat scenarios, Ukrainian aviators are conditioned from the earliest stages of training to execute missions without full dependence on GPS. The course, run by the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom, includes skills like orienting using rivers, terrain features, and natural landmarks. The impact of Russian EW—which disrupts navigation, communications, and weapons guidance systems—forces both air and ground units to adjust their tactics.

After completing basic training, Ukrainian pilots will continue their education on jet aircraft in other countries, eventually transitioning to American F-16 fighters. Ukraine plans to begin receiving these aircraft in 2024. The training of Ukrainian military personnel in the UK is part of Operation Interflex, which also covers tactical medicine, casualty evacuation, and combat drills.

“The ability to fly at low altitudes without GPS is a critically important skill,” one pilot noted.

The progress of trainees—from their first solo flight to complex low-altitude maneuvers and simulated combat missions—demonstrates the effectiveness of the program.

This initiative to train Ukrainian pilots under conditions of limited GPS reliance underscores the need to adapt to modern threats faced by Ukrainian forces. The training in the UK is part of a broader strategy to prepare the Ukrainian armed forces for effective combat operations in environments where Russian EW can significantly impact mission outcomes. In the long term, this could greatly enhance the combat readiness and tactical capabilities of Ukrainian aviation.

In addition to training pilots to navigate without GPS, Ukraine has recently received its first mobile simulators for F-16 pilot training. These simulators are expected to enhance the preparedness of Ukrainian aviators by providing realistic training scenarios.
