Training for Ukrainian Military on Gripen C/D Fighters Underway
Swedish defense officials have confirmed that Ukrainian personnel have started training to operate the Gripen C/D fighter aircraft. Initial deliveries of the jets are anticipated in early next year, according to Sweden's Defense Minister Pål Jonsson, who shared the update on social media platform X. This integration effort is part of the 22nd military aid package, with Stockholm's total support for Ukraine now reaching approximately €11.8 billion.
The training program currently covers both pilots and technical crews, with activities set to expand significantly in the fall. This will help Ukraine strengthen its air force capabilities.
“The transfer of these fighters marks a new phase in the development of Ukraine’s air defense,” Jonsson stated.
Future Plans
Deliveries of the Gripen C/D are scheduled to begin early next year, once all necessary approvals are in place. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that Ukraine will receive its first jets within the next ten months. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has also confirmed that the JAS 39 Gripen C/D aircraft will be transferred to Ukraine by 2030.
“Ukraine is not just receiving aircraft. Ukraine is building a modern air force capable of fighting, surviving, and adapting in Europe’s toughest conditions. The goal is clear: to strengthen Ukraine faster now and create a modern air force for decades to come. A stronger Ukrainian air force makes Ukraine safer, Europe stronger, and Russia’s space for aggression smaller,” Jonsson added.
This deepening military cooperation between Ukraine and Sweden reflects growing international backing for Kyiv’s security and defense needs. The transfer of Gripen C/D fighters represents a major step in bolstering Ukraine’s aerial defenses, especially given the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region. It may also serve as a model for other nations considering military support for Ukraine.
As Ukraine enhances its air force capabilities with the upcoming Gripen C/D fighters, it is also receiving essential support in maintaining military infrastructure. Recently, Sweden has provided runway maintenance equipment to Ukraine's military airfields, ensuring that the operational readiness of these new aircraft will be maximized. This comprehensive approach underscores the commitment of international partners in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
