Ukrainian Missiles Breach Russian Air Defenses From 1,500 Kilometers Away

Українські ракети долають російські системи ППО, завдаючи ударів з відстані 1500 кілометрів.

Strikes on Strategic Infrastructure

Ukraine's defense forces launched long-range missile attacks on strategic targets in Russia's Leningrad Oblast and Chuvashia, exposing weaknesses in Moscow's air defense network. Among the sites hit was the Kirishinefteorgsintez oil refinery, one of Russia's three largest refineries with an annual processing capacity of up to 21 million tons. Drones damaged three out of four crude distillation units at the facility.

In a separate strike, Ukrainian forces targeted the VNIIR-Progress plant in Chuvashia using domestically produced F-5 Flamingo cruise missiles, which traveled 1,500 kilometers to reach their objective. The attack damaged the facility's production line for Kometa antennas. The VNIIR-Progress plant is located roughly 300 kilometers from the Alabuga special economic zone in Tatarstan, another site where kamikaze drones are manufactured.

Operation Deep Strike

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the use of FP-5 Flamingo missiles in these operations.

These hits on deep Russian territory are part of Operation Deep Strike, demonstrating Ukraine's growing ability to execute complex, long-range missions. In response, Russia's Defense Ministry threatened a massive strike on central Kyiv if the May 9 parade in Moscow is disrupted. At the same time, Moscow announced a unilateral ceasefire for May 8–9.

The attacks on strategic assets mark a new phase in the conflict and highlight vulnerabilities in Russia's air defense system, which could have serious implications for the regional balance. Continued strikes of this nature underscore Ukraine's expanding capacity to conduct long-distance operations, potentially shifting the military dynamics and influencing future strategies on both sides.

As Ukraine continues to innovate its military strategies, the recent strikes on Russian infrastructure have raised questions about the effectiveness of Moscow's defenses.
