Explosions in Cheboksary and Attack on VNIIR-Progress
On June 10, 2026, explosions rocked Cheboksary as the defense enterprise VNIIR-Progress came under attack. A fire broke out on the factory grounds. Witnesses reported seeing missiles overhead, identified as Ukrainian Flamingo models. The facility’s administrative building is protected by nets, and metal towers with netting have been erected on the site following previous strikes. This marks the third attack on VNIIR-Progress, with two earlier incidents occurring on May 5 of this year.
VNIIR-Progress manufactures Kometa antennas for the Russian military. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the plant produces GNSS receivers and antennas for satellite systems such as GLONASS, GPS, and Galileo, which are used in Shahed kamikaze drones, Iskander-M and Kalibr missiles, and UMPK modules for aerial bombs. Authorities in Chuvashia reported a missile threat and mobilized emergency services.
“The defense enterprise VNIIR-Progress has been attacked again and is burning in Cheboksary, according to OSINT analysts.”
Strike on Kuibyshev Refinery and Other Developments
That same night, the Kuibyshev oil refinery in Samara, part of Rosneft, also came under attack. Samara Oblast Governor Fedorishchev declared a drone threat alert around 2 a.m., followed by a missile threat at approximately 6 a.m., which was lifted two hours later. The strike on the Kuibyshev refinery triggered a fire. This facility had previously been targeted in 2024 and 2025. Reports also emerged of a strike on an oil depot in Millerovo, Rostov Oblast, overnight.
These events highlight the continuation of active military operations in the region, particularly targeted strikes on Russia’s military infrastructure. Attacks on defense plants and oil refineries reflect a strategic effort to destroy resources essential for waging war. The increasing frequency of strikes on key assets could further escalate the conflict and alter the dynamics of military operations in the area.
The recent attacks on military and industrial sites in Russia are part of a broader strategy targeting key infrastructure. Notably, earlier that night, Ukrainian drones also struck an oil refinery in the Samara region, further escalating tensions.
