Ukrainian Ski Jumpers' Performance in Milan-Cortina
Ukrainian ski jumpers Yevhen Marusiak and Vitalii Kalinichenko failed to advance to the final round at the Milan-Cortina competition, finishing outside the required top-30 qualification spots. This result was a disappointment for the team, as both athletes concluded their runs below the qualifying threshold. The event is part of the World Cup circuit, a key proving ground ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Yevhen Marusiak posted a jump of 124.5 meters, earning him 41st place, while Vitalii Kalinichenko's 120.5-meter effort placed him 44th. Both athletes have experience competing at the highest level, having participated in the XXIV Winter Olympic Games in Beijing in 2022. Notably, Marusiak entered the Milan-Cortina 2026 event holding the Ukrainian national record.
Team Coach's Comments
Team coach Volodymyr Boshchuk expressed his disappointment with the results, stating the team had hoped for higher placements, aiming for at least the top-30 and possibly even the top-20. He emphasized that the athletes have repeatedly demonstrated a level of performance that should have secured them a spot in the second round. Boshchuk also pointed to technical aspects like the in-run and take-off table, which were practiced in training, yet errors still occurred during competition.
Despite the unsuccessful qualification attempt, Boshchuk maintains faith in his athletes' potential.
"I know they can jump significantly better. I believe the team will show a different level,"the coach noted. The athletes' next opportunity will be the team event scheduled for February 16th.
This performance underscores the challenges athletes face in international competition. Past achievements, such as Olympic participation, do not automatically guarantee success in new events. The team has an opportunity to improve in upcoming starts, and the hope for the team event may allow the jumpers to demonstrate their true potential and post better results.
