Falling Short of Qualification

At the 2026 World Figure Skating Championships, the Ukrainian ice dance duo of Mariia Pinchuk and Mykyta Pohorielov failed to qualify for the free dance segment. Their 27th-place finish in the rhythm dance, with a score of 59.45 points, left them outside the top 20 required to advance. They placed 27th out of 31 competing pairs in this initial phase.

Overcoming Obstacles with a Symbol of Support

Their preparation was hampered by a knee injury to Mariia Pinchuk, which posed a significant challenge. Despite this setback, their performance featured several strong technical elements:

  • Their twizzle sequence was graded at Level 4;
  • The lift element received a Level 3;
  • Their midline step sequence received mixed grades: Pinchuk was assessed at Level 1, while Pohorielov was graded at Level 2.

The rhythm dance was led by the French pair of Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron, who scored 92.74 points, establishing a lead of over six points ahead of their nearest Canadian rivals.

In the kiss-and-cry area, the Ukrainian skaters held a flag bearing the signatures of Ukrainian soldiers from the Zaporizhzhia region, a powerful gesture of gratitude and solidarity. Mykyta Pohorielov explained the flag's significance:

"It was fundamentally important for them to bring this symbol to the arena, to feel the strength of the defenders and to thank them for the opportunity to represent the country on the international stage."

This appearance marked a significant step for the duo, even as fellow Ukrainian skater Kyrylo Marsak successfully qualified for the World Championship free dance for the first time. The Ukrainian ice dance team continues to refine their skills and prepare for future competitions.

Their participation on the global stage serves as a poignant symbol of resilience and support for Ukraine's armed forces. Competing in world championships provides a vital platform for Ukrainian athletes to focus international attention on their nation, highlighting themes of unity and perseverance during a time of conflict.

As the Ukrainian ice dance team looks to the future, it's worth noting the recent achievements of their compatriots. The duo of Golichenko and Darenskyi not only showcased their talent but also secured a commendable 18th place at the World Championships held in Prague. Their performance highlights the growing competitiveness of Ukrainian figure skaters on the international stage.
