Day of Remembrance and Victory
May 8 marks the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II (1939–1945), a public holiday established in Ukraine in 2023. The red poppy serves as its official symbol. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has drawn parallels between the events of 81 years ago and Russia’s ongoing aggression. For an English-speaking audience, this date coincides with Europe-wide Victory in Europe (VE) Day commemorations.
“It was a great honor, on behalf of the Government of Ukraine, to lead a delegation of veterans from the Russo-Ukrainian war to take part in the 81st anniversary Victory celebrations in Paris. The ceremony was chaired by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron. The President personally shook hands with Ukrainian veterans who, in the 21st century, are defending democracy and the free world!”
Nataliia Kalmykova
These events underscore the importance of honoring war victims and supporting Ukrainian veterans who continue to fight for freedom and independence. The participation of Ukrainian veterans in Paris commemorations serves as a powerful symbol of international solidarity with Ukraine amid modern aggression. Remembering the victims of World War II and the fight against Nazism highlights shared democratic values that remain deeply relevant today. It also demonstrates how historical events continue to shape the present, reminding us of the need for unity in the struggle for peace and global stability.
The recent commemorative events in Paris not only honored the sacrifices of World War II but also highlighted the ongoing struggle against modern threats. In this context, Zelenskyy's remarks about Russian aggression as a contemporary form of Nazism resonate deeply, reinforcing the significance of standing united against tyranny in all its forms.
