How Ukraine's Military Uses a Points System to Motivate Its Forces
To boost combat effectiveness and morale, the Ukrainian military has implemented a novel electronic points system. This initiative rewards units for destroying enemy equipment and evacuating wounded soldiers, representing a modern approach to battlefield incentives.
Maksym 'Kondor' Bohachuk, commander of the 'Sky Predators' unmanned aerial systems battalion within the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade, reported that his unit earned 184 points from a single successful mission. The scoring system assigns different point values based on the target destroyed:
- Helicopter — 100 points
- Aircraft — 200 points
- Each of 7 eliminated occupiers — 12 points
- Destruction of automotive equipment — 5 points
- Damage to equipment — 2 points
Evacuating the wounded is another critical component of the system. Rescuing a soldier from 'zero' (a trench) can yield up to 120 points per individual, while extraction from a hazardous zone within 2 kilometers of the frontline is valued at 80–100 points.
Maksym 'Kondor' Bohachuk emphasized the importance of combined arms tactics, stating: 'Any equipment without infantry cover is worthless. Only in tandem do they become a serious force, which is why eliminating personnel is the priority.'
This electronic scoring framework not only incentivizes proactive engagement but also reinforces the value of teamwork on the modern battlefield. Such gamified motivation systems are increasingly common in modern militaries seeking to enhance unit cohesion and performance.
The introduction of this points-based motivation system highlights the innovative and adaptive methods Ukrainian forces are employing in their defense. By making contributions quantifiable, it serves as a tool to improve unit effectiveness, solidarity, and soldier morale—each soldier can see their direct impact on the collective effort. This approach could positively influence combat outcomes and Ukraine's broader strategic position on the front lines.
