Development of the Ukrainian defense industry
The Ukrainian defense industry is actively developing; however, it faces challenges in cooperation with international companies due to differences in organizational structures and bureaucratic barriers. According to Ihor Fedirko, executive director of the Ukrainian Council of Gunsmiths, Ukrainian companies aged 1 to 3 years are trying to establish cooperation with European partners such as Rheinmetall and Diehl, which have decades of experience in the market.
Cooperation with European partners
Germany and Denmark are the main partners of Ukrainian gunsmiths in Europe. Recently, Denmark changed its legislation to support joint projects, creating new opportunities for Ukrainian manufacturers. For example, a joint venture was created between the German company Quantum Systems and the Ukrainian Frontline Robotics, which is a step towards closer cooperation.
However, despite progress, Ukrainian companies face difficulties in the speed of decision-making. Ihor Fedirko notes:
We are young, eager, fast, while old Europe says: don’t rush, we will aim now, talk to our government.
This difference in approaches can create additional barriers in cooperation. He also points out that the German Ministry of Defense is impressed by the lack of strict regulation in Ukraine compared to Germany, highlighting the need for adaptation to European standards.
Proposals from Ukrainian producers include:
- ground robotic complexes
- bomber drones
- solutions based on artificial intelligence
These innovative projects have the potential for further development of cooperation with European partners; however, to successfully implement them, it is necessary to overcome existing bureaucratic barriers and find common ground in organizational approaches.
The development of cooperation between Ukrainian defense companies and European partners can significantly strengthen Ukraine's defense capability, especially in the face of current threats. Changes in Danish legislation and the establishment of joint ventures indicate a growing interest of European countries in cooperating with Ukraine. However, to achieve success, Ukrainian companies must adapt to European standards and respond more quickly to changes in the market.
