Radomyr Stelmakh's Change of Sporting Nationality
The International Gymnastics Federation has approved a change of sporting nationality for Ukrainian gymnast Radomyr Stelmakh, who will now represent Germany. This change will take effect in 2027. For now, the 20-year-old Stelmakh continues to compete under the Ukrainian flag, as confirmed by Stella Zakharova. Stelmakh is a native of Zaporizhzhia and relocated to Germany following Russia's full-scale invasion, where he currently trains in Cottbus.
In 2024, the gymnast won a gold medal at the European Championships as part of the Ukrainian team, a major achievement in his young career. Last year, he was also registered in the personnel roster of the German Gymnastics Federation. Such switches in sporting nationality are complex processes governed by international federation rules.
The Situation for Ukrainian Athletes
At the start of this January, Ukraine's Ministry of Youth and Sports approved the national gymnastics team roster for 2026, which still included Stelmakh. Meanwhile, other Ukrainian athletes, like Ilya Kovtun, have also changed sporting nationality, with Kovtun switching to represent Croatia. Kovtun, a silver medalist at the 2024 Olympics, will officially gain the right to compete for Croatia in July 2026, with his first major challenge being the European Championships in Zagreb.
Some commentators, including Vadym Huttsait, have suggested that such sporting transitions can be viewed as a betrayal. Consequently, the situation involving Radomyr Stelmakh and other athletes has sparked significant debate within the sports community. These nationality changes, set against the backdrop of political and social circumstances in Ukraine, elicit mixed reactions. They reflect not only the personal ambitions of the athletes but also the difficult conditions that have compelled many to leave the country and seek new opportunities abroad. The departures of athletes like Stelmakh and Kovtun could impact the future of Ukrainian sport, affecting the composition of national teams and their prospects on the international stage.
