Mstyslav Chernov's Award
Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov has been honored with the 2025 U.S. Directors Guild Award for his documentary '2000 Meters to Andriivka'. The award recognizes his 'Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary'. The ceremony took place on February 7 in Beverly Hills. This win underscores the growing international recognition for Ukrainian filmmakers documenting the realities of war.
This is not Chernov's first accolade from the Guild; in 2024, he received the same award for his film '20 Days in Mariupol'. That film, shot during the Russian siege of Mariupol, gained international acclaim and won the Oscar for 'Best Documentary Feature Film' in March 2024, marking Ukraine's first-ever win in that category.
The '20 Days in Mariupol' Team
'20 Days in Mariupol' was a collaborative effort by Mstyslav Chernov, photographer Evgeniy Maloletka, and media producer Vasilisa Stepanenko. Trapped in the besieged city in March 2022, they were among the last journalists reporting on the initial stages of the city's destruction by Russian forces. For this work, all three were awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
The film's events unfold in February-March 2022 and contain footage of Russian shelling, including the bombing of a maternity hospital.
“And perhaps the most terrifying thing of all was the feeling that we couldn't change anything. No matter how much we filmed, no matter how much we showed the world, it just kept going on.”
Mstyslav Chernov
Chernov's latest award highlights his significant contribution to documentary filmmaking and the vital importance of chronicling the events of the war in Ukraine. His films not only capture reality but also foster international understanding, shaping global perspectives on the conflict's complexities.
This process is critically important for bolstering support for Ukraine in its fight for independence and territorial integrity.
