Petition Calls for Sanctions on Russian Athletes
A formal petition calling for sanctions against Russian athletes who have expressed support for the war has been filed with the Ukrainian government. The petition was registered on January 27, 2026, by Vladyslav Heraskevych, a leader in Ukrainian skeleton. It includes a list of athletes against whom restrictive measures are proposed. Heraskevych hopes these sanctions will gain international traction, thereby complicating the listed individuals' ability to compete outside of Russia. This move highlights the ongoing efforts by Ukrainian civil society to hold supporters of the invasion accountable across all sectors.
Significance of Heraskevych's Initiative
Heraskevych has emphasized that submitting this list is a crucial step in countering Russian aggression. He stressed that if adopted internationally, such sanctions would establish grounds for barring these Russian athletes from entering Europe, America, and Canada.
“Sanctions should have been imposed much earlier,” – Vladyslav Heraskevych
The proposed sanctions list names the following Russian athletes:
- Angelina Melnikova, who has voiced support for the war in Ukraine on social media;
- Svetlana Gomboeva, who has made multiple visits to annexed Crimea;
- Yana Yegoryan, an ambassador for an organization implicated in the abduction of Ukrainian children;
- Yevgeny Baidousov, who also violated Ukrainian law by visiting annexed Crimea;
- Imam Ganishev, who visited occupied territories and produced propaganda materials;
- Madina Taimazova, who contributed to legitimizing the deportation of Ukrainian children;
- Vladislav Larin, who has called for support of Russian military forces;
- Maxim Khramtsov, who conducted sporting events in occupied Donetsk;
- Fyodor Chudinov, who participated in propaganda events with Ukrainian children in temporarily occupied territories.
These actions have provoked outrage among Ukrainian athletes and the public, underscoring the importance of Heraskevych's initiative.
Imposing sanctions on Russian athletes who endorse the aggression could mark a significant step for Ukraine in its struggle for international recognition of its rights and defense against invasion. Heraskevych's petition not only demonstrates the proactive stance of Ukrainian athletes but also underscores the necessity of increasing international pressure on Russia regarding its actions in Ukraine. Importantly, this petition could lay the groundwork for further international measures, aiding in the isolation of the aggressor within the sporting world.
