Vladyslav Heraskevych Disqualified

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has disqualified Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych ahead of the 2026 Olympic Games. The decision came after the athlete refused to replace his competition helmet, which featured images of athletes who lost their lives due to Russian aggression. This move has sparked significant outrage among Ukrainian sports officials and the public. The case highlights the ongoing tensions between national expressions of mourning and the IOC's rules on political neutrality at the Games.

Backlash and Support

Mykhailo Heraskevych, President of the All-Ukrainian Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation and father of the athlete, has called for the IOC leadership to resign. He also stated his intention to appeal the disqualification to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Despite the ruling, Vladyslav Heraskevych did not receive a specific explanation for how his helmet violated Olympic principles.

In response, Monobank announced a 1 million hryvnia award for Vladyslav Heraskevych. Oleg Gorokhovsky, a representative of the bank, stated that Vladyslav is a 'worthy person, an outstanding athlete, and a true patriot of Ukraine,' expressing pride in him and emphasizing the importance of Ukraine's voice being heard globally. This financial gesture underscores the deep domestic support for the athlete's stance.

This incident underscores the heightened tensions between Ukraine and international sports bodies in the context of the ongoing war. Heraskevych's disqualification could set a significant precedent for other athletes attempting to make statements concerning aggression and violence. The reaction from the Ukrainian public and sports institutions demonstrates that issues of patriotism and justice remain potent and contentious within the world of international sport.
