Ukraine's Postal Service Issues Stamp to Back Disqualified Skeleton Athlete

Ukraine's Postal Service Launches New Commemorative Stamp

Ukraine's national postal service, Ukrposhta, has issued a new charity stamp in support of skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych. This action follows his disqualification by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for wearing a 'helmet of remembrance'. Heraskevych, the leader of Ukraine's skeleton team, was barred from competing in the 2026 Winter Olympics after he refused to wear neutral gear, insisting on using a helmet adorned with images of fallen Ukrainian athletes. The move highlights how Ukrainian athletes have become symbols of national resilience during the ongoing war.

The design of the new stamp prominently features this 'helmet of memory'. The IOC's official reason for disqualifying Vladyslav Heraskevych was his failure to comply with rules regarding athlete self-expression, despite other Olympians having taken similar actions without facing suspension.

A Symbol of Solidarity and National Identity

Ukrposhta has decided to present the athlete with 50 unique, numbered stamps. The stamp's title, 'When You Are With Ukraine, You Win!', underscores the support and respect for Heraskevych. As Ukrposhta stated:

'Today, Ukrposhta issues a stamp with Vladyslav Heraskevych. As a sign of support and respect. As a record of the moment when an athlete became the voice of an entire nation. There are things that cannot be disqualified. Dignity. Memory. Loyalty to the Homeland. And these things weigh more than any gold in the world.'

The release of this stamp not only backs Vladyslav Heraskevych but also reflects the broader socio-political context in Ukraine, where athletes now serve as symbols of national dignity. His disqualification sparked outrage among Ukrainian fans and the public, underscoring the significance of his personal stance within the context of the armed conflict. This case demonstrates how sport and politics can intersect, forging new forms of national identity and solidarity.
