Power Supply Issues Force Suspension of High-Speed Rail Service to Kharkiv

Проблеми з електропостачанням призвели до призупинення швидкісного залізничного сполучення з Харковом.

Intercity+ High-Speed Trains Temporarily Halted

Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway operator, has suspended its high-speed Intercity+ train service on the Kyiv-Kharkiv route, effective March 18. The ongoing disruption is a direct result of persistent power supply failures, which have caused significant delays of up to three hours. Consequently, these trains will now terminate in Poltava, where passengers must transfer to other transport to complete their journey to Kharkiv.

The first indications of schedule changes emerged on the evening of March 17. This suspension applies to all Intercity+ class trains bound for Kharkiv. For several weeks, high-speed electric trains on the Kharkiv-Poltava segment have been operating using backup diesel locomotives, a workaround that has also contributed to scheduling instability. Delays have been so severe that some trains have arrived after the start of the local curfew.

'All I can tell you is that it's true. The trains really aren't running. But official information will be released through Ukrzaliznytsia's official channels. For now, yes, it is indeed true.'

Future Plans and Current Information

Ukrzaliznytsia plans to restore full Intercity+ service to Kharkiv by the end of March. All other passenger routes to and from Kharkiv continue to operate on their normal schedules. This situation highlights the broader infrastructure challenges facing Ukraine's transportation network during wartime.

  • Train number 723 from Kharkiv to Kyiv departed on March 18 at 13:12.
  • Train number 223 from Kharkiv to Poltava departed at 13:50.

The temporary halt of the Kyiv-Kharkiv Intercity+ service, caused by an unstable power supply, underscores the strain on Ukraine's critical infrastructure. While other passenger routes remain unaffected, travelers are advised to monitor official railway announcements for updates on restoring high-speed connectivity. Reliable rail service is crucial for maintaining mobility between major population centers under current conditions.

The recent suspension of high-speed train services to Kharkiv has raised concerns about the reliability of Ukraine's rail infrastructure. For those interested in the latest developments regarding train operations, it's worth noting that the Kyiv-Kharkiv Intercity service now only reaches Poltava, reflecting ongoing challenges in the transportation network.
