Grant Agreements Between Ukrzaliznytsia and the EBRD

Ukrzaliznytsia, together with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and backing from the European Union, has signed two grant agreements totaling €54 million to fund three major initiatives. These projects focus on making train stations barrier-free, boosting energy independence, and investing in human capital. The deal follows commitments made in July 2024 at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome.

Key Project Areas

Specifically, €10 million is earmarked for improving station accessibility, aiming to ensure that all people, regardless of their abilities, can use these facilities without obstacles. Another €41 million will go toward purchasing gas piston power plants, a move designed to strengthen energy self-sufficiency. An additional €3 million will be used to establish a modern corporate university for Ukrzaliznytsia, to be called the UZ Academy.

Oleksiy Kuleba, commenting on these agreements, stated: 'With this €54 million grant, together with donors and Ukrzaliznytsia, we have covered three critical areas: barrier-free access, energy independence, and human capital development. Special emphasis is placed on supporting veterans, fostering inclusivity, and creating an environment where every employee has the opportunity to grow. I thank the European Union, the EBRD, the UK government, and the Energy Community for their trust and ongoing support.'

These agreements highlight Ukraine's ongoing efforts to upgrade its infrastructure and promote social integration, both of which are vital steps in the country's recovery process. The involvement of international financial institutions like the EBRD underscores global backing for Ukraine, which could encourage further investment and economic growth.

In addition to the recent funding for Ukrzaliznytsia, the government is also focusing on enhancing the defense sector through various initiatives. For instance, the introduction of training grants of up to 30,000 Hryvnias aims to support the development of skilled professionals in the defense industry. This move complements the broader strategy of strengthening Ukraine's capabilities in critical areas.
