Surge in Rail Travel Demand
Ukrainian Railways is responding to a sharp increase in ticket demand on key routes, especially between Kyiv and Lviv, where requests outstrip available seats by a factor of three. To address this, additional trains have been scheduled. The Kyiv-Odesa corridor sees even greater pressure, with demand exceeding supply by 4.5 times. Between June 8 and June 21, the company transported over one million passengers, highlighting a growing interest in travel across the country.
Popular Routes and Special Events
The Kyiv-Lviv connection and its reverse remain among the most sought-after services. Last week, the Kyiv-Przemyśl train was the most popular. A significant portion of travelers consists of children's groups, young athletes, and children of active-duty or fallen military personnel.
“To enable more people to travel, we added extra trains. These included cars previously used on less busy routes,” railway officials said.
Starting June 28, 2026, the Kyiv City Express will resume service across the bridge between Pochaina and Raiduzhnyi stations after nearly two months of repairs. To mark Ukraine's Constitution Day, Ukrainian Railways will also offer rides on historic steam locomotives. The 'Summer Steam Weekend' event is scheduled for June 27–28, 2026, on the Haivoron narrow-gauge railway, featuring the 159 No. 4-95 (built in 1938) and the Er 798-71 (built in 1954).
Additionally, from June 28, the Bessarabia train running between Kyiv and Chișinău will switch to a daily schedule.
“We recognize the scale of the seat shortage, so we are doing our best to add trains on popular weekend getaway routes whenever possible,” Ukrainian Railways stated. The company continues working to improve service and meet passenger needs.
The rising demand for rail travel in Ukraine, particularly on popular routes, signals a rebound in tourism activity and an increase in domestic trips. Adding extra trains and resuming service on new corridors could enhance the overall passenger experience and support the growth of Ukraine's railway sector. At the same time, initiatives that preserve historical heritage, such as steam locomotive excursions, underscore the cultural importance of rail transport. Analyzing these trends may assist in future planning of Ukrainian Railways' infrastructure and services.
As Ukrainian Railways enhances its services to accommodate the surge in rail travel, they are also preparing for special events that celebrate the nation's heritage. For instance, in honor of Constitution Day, the railway will operate historic steam locomotives, offering a unique travel experience for passengers. This initiative not only highlights the cultural significance of rail travel in Ukraine but also reflects the company's commitment to providing diverse options for its customers.
