Ukraine's Rail Operator Launches New Family Carriages
Ukrzaliznytsia has announced the launch of six new couchette carriages specifically designed for families traveling with children. The first three carriages have already been modernized and will begin service on the Lviv-Odesa and Kharkiv-Ivano-Frankivsk routes. Tickets for these new carriages will go on sale from late April to early May. This initiative is part of a broader effort to make rail travel more accessible and appealing to Ukrainian families.
Features of the New Family Carriages
The new family couchettes are equipped with folding ramps for easy access and include a range of child-friendly amenities. The carriages feature:
- Height-appropriate handrails;
- Protective barriers for upper bunks;
- Sleeping cots;
- Baby changing tables;
- Bottle warmers;
- Special child seats in the lavatories.
Furthermore, a dedicated children's menu will be offered, including options like syrnyky (cheese pancakes) or chicken nuggets with a side. The first passengers to experience the new carriages were children under the care of the charitable organization Save Ukraine. Ukrzaliznytsia plans to add three more carriages to other routes in the near future.
The introduction of these new family carriages by Ukrzaliznytsia represents a significant step in improving service for families with children.
Separately, from April 25th, the company will implement a new dynamic pricing system for ticket sales. It is also important to note that from April 18th, fares for SV (first-class) compartments on international trains will be indexed by approximately 20%. Adapting transport for younger passengers could boost the popularity of rail travel among families, which is particularly important given rising travel demand. The move to dynamic pricing also indicates the company's aim to adapt to modern market requirements and consumer needs.
