New Rules for Booking Tickets to Zaporizhzhia
Ukraine’s state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, has changed how tickets are sold for trains heading to Zaporizhzhia due to escalating Russian strikes. Starting now, tickets for this destination are available only for a limited time window and on a restricted set of routes. Despite the ongoing danger, rail service to Zaporizhzhia continues to operate. To maintain connectivity in this region, Ukrzaliznytsia, in coordination with the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, has introduced bus services for the final leg of passengers’ journeys.
The shift in ticketing policy follows a surge in Russian attacks on railway infrastructure and passenger trains. Over the past week, air-raid monitoring systems detected threats at least twice in time to trigger emergency evacuations, with people moved to safety just minutes before strikes hit. On July 19, a Russian drone struck a passenger train in the Zaporizhzhia region, lightly wounding a train attendant. After the attack, passengers were taken to Zaporizhzhia by bus, with assistance from the regional administration.
Train Schedules and Safety Measures
Tickets for train No. 038K running between Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia are currently on sale through August 2 inclusive. This train departs Kyiv at 10:02 PM and arrives in Zaporizhzhia at 7:15 AM. On the return leg, it leaves Zaporizhzhia at 8:29 PM and reaches Kyiv at 5:52 AM. However, delays are common—trains on the Zaporizhzhia–Kyiv route are often held up for over five hours due to shelling in the Zaporizhzhia region.
Oleksandr Shevchenko stated: 'Attacks on railway infrastructure in the region have intensified, so we are acting with extreme caution, prioritizing the safety of passengers and railway workers. We have stepped up monitoring of aerial threats, which over the past week has at least twice provided timely warnings of danger and enabled the evacuation of people just minutes before the actual strikes on the trains.'
These changes to ticket sales for Zaporizhzhia reflect Ukrzaliznytsia’s effort to adapt to the severe security challenges posed by active hostilities in the area. The use of buses for last-mile transportation demonstrates a commitment to moving passengers even under heightened risk. Such measures are part of a broader strategy aimed at protecting travelers in zones where the threat of shelling remains high.
As the situation in Zaporizhzhia becomes increasingly precarious, similar challenges are being faced across Ukraine. Recent reports indicate that train delays can reach up to 10 hours in the Kyiv region due to ongoing Russian assaults.
