Rustem Umerov Meets with Turkish Leadership
During a visit to Ankara, Ukraine's Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, held a series of meetings with senior Turkish officials. The discussions centered on security matters, the state of ongoing negotiations, and key humanitarian issues. Turkey has been a significant regional partner for Ukraine, often acting as a mediator. Umerov met with:
- Turkish Defense Minister Yasar Guler,
- Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan,
- Head of the National Intelligence Organization Ibrahim Kalin,
- Presidential Foreign Policy Advisor Akif Cagatay Kilic.
The talks focused on the current security landscape and coordinating next steps to address shared threats. Rustem Umerov stated:
“We discussed the security situation, the progress of the negotiation process, and the coordination of further steps regarding common threats. We also talked about joint projects in the field of regional security.” - Rustem Umerov
Humanitarian efforts remained a top priority, particularly the ongoing work to secure the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians.
Meetings with the US Delegation
Separately, on March 22, meetings took place with a US delegation in Florida, chaired by Rustem Umerov himself. Following the second day of these talks, progress was reported in aligning positions and narrowing the range of unresolved issues. Umerov also expressed gratitude for Turkey's support, noting:
“We coordinated approaches for further interaction. Turkey plays an important role as a partner and a platform for dialogue.” - Rustem Umerov
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signaled the potential for continuing prisoner exchanges, indicating a renewed push for humanitarian initiatives.
These high-level engagements underscore the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Turkey, especially amid regional security challenges. The collaborative work on humanitarian issues, including prisoner repatriation, highlights both nations' efforts to strengthen cooperation and mutual support. The parallel dialogue with the United States further points to intensifying international backing for Ukraine's pursuit of peace and stability.
In addition to his discussions in Turkey, Umerov is actively enhancing Ukraine's diplomatic efforts in the Middle East. This initiative aims to strengthen regional partnerships and address security challenges.
