International Highway Repairs to Conclude by May
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko has directed that ongoing repairs on highways of international importance must be completed by May 1st. She emphasized that these roads are vital for the nation's defense capabilities and for maintaining efficient logistics. Since the start of 2026, over 518,000 square meters of road damage have already been repaired. The Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development has been tasked with accelerating the pace of work, increasing daily repair rates from 60,000 square meters to 150,000 square meters by the end of March.
Funding for Road Repairs
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that 52 billion hryvnias are required for road repairs. Furthermore, on March 12th, the head of the State Agency for Restoration and Infrastructure Development, Serhiy Sukhomlyn, announced a need for up to 50 billion hryvnias to repair winter damage. According to Sukhomlyn, the main work on international highways is planned for completion by June, with 95-98% of the work involving pothole repair. These infrastructure projects are crucial for maintaining supply chains and economic activity during a time of conflict.
The funding situation for road works in 2024-2025 was critical, as financing for the road fund was virtually absent. Concurrently, expenditures for the capital repair of municipal roads sharply increased during these years. The State Audit Service is conducting an inspection of the Kyivavtodor municipal corporation, highlighting the importance of oversight in the use of budgetary funds for road construction.
Completing repairs on international routes is critically important for ensuring not only security but also the stability of Ukraine's transport links. A high pace of repair work and sufficient funding can significantly impact logistics, which in turn would positively affect the country's economic situation. The funding challenges underscore the need to improve the system for managing budgetary funds in the road sector to avoid similar crises in the future.
