Four Key Sectors Tapped for Ukraine's Post-War Economic Breakthrough

В Україні визначено чотири основні напрямки для економічного відновлення після війни.

Charting a Path for Post-War Economic Growth

At the 'Education of New Ukraine 2.0' forum, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko outlined the four industries expected to drive the country’s recovery after the war ends: energy, machinery, IT, and defense technologies. The Cabinet of Ministers has already mapped out a national recovery strategy centered on these sectors, which demonstrated considerable resilience during Russia’s full-scale invasion.

'These are the fields where we showed our strength during the full-scale invasion, where we gained unique experience—this is what we can export and build upon.' — Yuliia Svyrydenko

Currently, approximately 31 million people live in government-controlled areas of Ukraine, with about 13 million officially employed. Data released in early May shows that 10.5 million individuals are paying the Unified Social Contribution. Mobilization, ongoing since the start of the full-scale war, has reshaped the labor market and intensified the demand for skilled professionals.

Boosting Training and Retraining Initiatives

In response, the Cabinet of Ministers is expanding support for training and retraining programs aimed at women, helping to fill critical skill gaps across multiple industries. These programs target high-demand professions, including:

  • truck drivers
  • heavy machinery operators
  • auto mechanics
  • welders

This initiative represents a key step toward ensuring the country’s sustainable development after the war.

By concentrating efforts on revitalizing these core economic sectors, Ukraine signals its ambition not just to rebuild, but to modernize its economy in the post-war era. Supporting training and retraining for women is a vital component of building a new workforce aligned with current labor market needs. It also promotes greater gender equality in the workplace and encourages women to enter traditionally male-dominated fields, further contributing to the nation’s social stability.

As Ukraine looks to bolster its economy post-conflict, the ongoing mobilization efforts have created significant labor shortages, particularly in essential sectors. This has prompted the government to actively recruit women into key roles, addressing both the skill gaps and the need for a more diverse workforce.
