Naftogaz Ukraine Welcomes New Supervisory Board
Ukraine's government has appointed a new supervisory board for the National Joint Stock Company 'Naftogaz of Ukraine'. The appointments, announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, follow a selection process managed by a nominations committee. The newly formed board consists of six members, with four being independent international experts and two representing the state. This move is seen as a key step in aligning the state-owned energy company with international corporate governance standards.
Board Composition
The four independent international members of the supervisory board are:
- Robert Szczesniak from Poland
- Erik Rasmussen from Denmark
- Duncan Nightingale from Canada
- Tor Martin Anfinnsen from Norway
The two state representatives appointed to the board are:
- Anna Artemenko, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine
- Kostiantyn Marevych, State Secretary of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine
This restructuring is part of a broader government initiative to overhaul the management of Ukraine's state-owned energy enterprises. As Prime Minister Shmyhal noted,
"We are simultaneously finalizing the renewal of supervisory boards across the entire energy sector—for 'Centrenergo', 'Ukrainian Distribution Networks', 'Ukrenergo', 'Ukrhydroenergo', 'Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine', and others."These reforms are critical for attracting international investment and ensuring operational resilience.
The renewal of Naftogaz's supervisory board is a component of the government's wider strategy to reform the country's energy sector. Amidst the ongoing war and a persistent energy crisis, ensuring effective governance of state enterprises by incorporating international expertise is paramount. This approach aims to enhance the financial stability and market competitiveness of these vital national companies.
