Ukraine Allocates 2 Billion Hryvnias for School Bomb Shelters: Which Communities Will Benefit

На будівництво укриттів для шкіл виділять 2 мільярди гривень: які громади отримають підтримку.

Funding for Educational Facility Shelters

The Ukrainian government is directing over 2 billion hryvnias to build and equip bomb shelters in educational institutions across 30 communities. This funding is part of a larger 5-billion-hryvnia national budget for general secondary school shelters planned for 2026. The distribution of this subvention has been approved, with priority given to schools in communities facing the highest risk levels, as well as military lyceums.

In a separate initiative for 2024, an additional 1 billion hryvnias is earmarked for modernizing vocational and professional pre-higher education. These funds, part of the '100 Workshops' project, will be used to upgrade laboratories, learning spaces, and energy efficiency. The government has also committed to providing 500 educational institutions with alternative power sources by the end of 2024.

Reallocation of Subvention Funds

In February 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to reallocate 231 million hryvnias of subvention funds to complete work on school shelters in 11 regions. 'Thirty communities will receive over 2 billion hryvnias for shelters in educational institutions. The government has approved the distribution of the subvention. First and foremost, funds will go to schools in communities with a very high level of risk, as well as military lyceums,' stated Yuliia Svyrydenko.

This government initiative responds to the critical need to ensure the safety of students and educators during military threats. These investments in shelters and the modernization of educational infrastructure are vital for maintaining a functional education system during the ongoing war. They not only provide immediate physical protection but also help improve overall learning conditions, which is essential for adapting to the challenging realities of wartime.

In addition to the recent funding for bomb shelters, the government has also prioritized transportation for students. With an allocation of $54 million for over 540 school buses, authorities are addressing the essential requirements for safe student mobility. This initiative complements the broader efforts to enhance educational infrastructure and promote safety during these challenging times.
