Distribution of $54 Million for School Buses

According to Кабмін: The Ukrainian government has approved the allocation of 2 billion hryvnias (approximately $54 million USD) to purchase more than 540 school buses in 2026. This funding will be provided to local communities based on a set of priority school categories. Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko stated that mandatory conditions for receiving the subsidy include having a shelter at the educational institution and co-financing from local budgets.

Priority Categories for Schools

Priority for receiving buses will be given to institutions serving children with special educational needs, who will have access to specially equipped vehicles. The priority list also includes schools that will become academic lyceums starting in the 2027/2028 academic year and will accept students from other community schools, as well as schools that will transport children from institutions that were liquidated or reorganized in 2026.

Additionally, the following are on the priority list:

  • Special schools and educational-rehabilitation centers;
  • Schools with at least 200 students;
  • Institutions with over 100 pupils.

This initiative follows the 2025 'School Bus' program, which had a budget of 2.7 billion hryvnias and funded the purchase of about 700 Ukrainian-made buses. This ongoing investment aims to improve educational access and safety for students across the country, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

The government's move demonstrates an effort to enhance learning conditions for children, especially those with special educational needs. Establishing priorities for bus distribution may improve educational accessibility for all students and increase safety during school commutes. The requirement for shelters at schools is a critical aspect, reflecting current safety needs in the face of ongoing challenges.
