Ukraine's Roadmap for Prosthetic Care Reform

The Ukrainian government has approved a comprehensive reform plan for the nation's prosthetic care sector. This initiative, developed by an interagency working group coordinated by the Ministry of Social Policy and the Ministry of Health, aims to significantly improve the quality, transparency, and effectiveness of prosthetic services. This reform is particularly critical given the increased need for such services following Russia's full-scale invasion.

Key directions for change were discussed at an interagency working group meeting on January 16. The session was attended by Minister of Social Policy, Family, and Unity Denys Ulutin, Minister of Health Viktor Liashko, and Minister for Veterans Affairs Nataliia Kalmykova. The approved roadmap focuses on several crucial areas:

  • Streamlining the patient pathway and enhancing the quality of prosthetic devices
  • Upgrading digital tools and systems
  • Fostering the professional development of specialists
  • Establishing transparent and understandable pricing mechanisms

The meeting was held with the support of the "Rehabilitation in Ukraine" (Rehab4U) project, highlighting the international cooperation underpinning this vital effort to improve the lives of those requiring prosthetics.

The Significance of Reforming Prosthetic Care

This reform represents a crucial step toward enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities in Ukraine. By addressing the needs of both civilian patients and veterans, the implementation of new standards and technologies can substantially improve access to medical services, ensuring more effective treatment and rehabilitation. The initiative underscores the importance of collaboration between various state bodies and the value of international support in the field of rehabilitation.
