Ursula von der Leyen’s Trip to Lithuania
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is making an urgent trip to Lithuania following a wave of drone incidents across the Baltic states. During her visit, she is scheduled to meet with Baltic heads of state and government to coordinate a joint response to the drone threat and bolster security along NATO’s eastern flank. EU Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius will also be traveling to Lithuania for the talks.
Drone Incidents
Last week, Lithuania declared an air alert after a drone was spotted near its border with Belarus. This was just one of several troubling incidents in the region. Earlier this month, two Ukrainian drones heading toward Russia crashed on Latvian territory. Additionally, a NATO aircraft shot down a drone over Estonian airspace last week, further escalating regional tensions.
In February of this year, the European Union launched a plan to strengthen security for member states bordering Russia. In response to the latest developments, NATO has activated an air patrol mission over the Baltic region. Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also lodged a protest with Russia’s chargé d'affaires and issued an official note over a Kremlin disinformation campaign. This diplomatic move was prompted by a public statement from the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service on May 19, 2026.
Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that 'Russia’s public threats against the Baltic states are completely unacceptable. Russia and Belarus bear direct responsibility for the drones that endanger lives and security on our eastern flank. Europe will respond with unity and strength.'
