Ursula von der Leyen's Trip to Kyiv

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in Kyiv on February 24. This marks her tenth visit to the Ukrainian capital since the full-scale invasion began. During her trip, she is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Key topics for discussion will include:

  • Accelerating the delivery of weapons and military aid;
  • Implementing the EU's 20th sanctions package against the Russian Federation.

Major Financial Aid for Ukraine

Simultaneously in Brussels, the legal framework for a massive €90 billion loan to Ukraine is expected to be finalized. This financial support is designated for the 2026-2027 period. The European Commission aims to begin disbursements as early as April, demonstrating the EU's robust and active backing for Ukraine. This visit underscores the EU's long-term strategic commitment, which has been crucial for Ukraine's defense and economic stability.

My tenth visit to Kyiv falls on a tragic anniversary, but I am here to say: we will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes. Our support—financial, military, and political—will only grow stronger. Ursula von der Leyen

Von der Leyen's presence signals the European Union's enduring and strategic support for Ukraine, particularly in the face of ongoing military aggression and economic challenges. The finalization of the loan agreement and the acceleration of weapons supplies could significantly impact Ukraine's capacity to resist the invasion. The future course of events will depend on how these agreements are implemented and how the Russian Federation responds to these developments.
