Full Reinstatement for Russian and Belarusian Wrestlers

United World Wrestling (UWW) has announced the complete reinstatement of Russia and Belarus, permitting athletes from both countries to compete under their national flags and anthems across all age categories with no restrictions. This decision follows recommendations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and comes after a lengthy suspension period. Russian representatives were barred from competitions from March 2022 until April 2023, after which they were only allowed to participate as neutral athletes.

In September 2024, UWW eased eligibility criteria for Russian and Belarusian competitors. By January 2026, a new resolution allowed wrestlers from these nations to compete under their national flags in the U23 age group. Under the updated rules, wrestlers from Belarus and Russia can now display their national flags at every age level, including senior competitions. Athletes and staff may wear uniforms featuring the country initials RUS and BLR, and the national anthems of both nations will be played during UWW award ceremonies whenever their wrestlers win gold medals or their teams claim a championship title.

Impact on International Sports Policy

Beyond wrestling, athletes from Russia and Belarus have also been allowed to compete under their own flags in sports such as:

  • Sambo
  • Judo
  • Taekwondo
  • Aquatic sports

At the youth level, sanctions have been lifted in chess, fencing, and volleyball. Restrictions on team participation in international events have been removed, enabling athletes from these countries to once again compete on a global stage.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian national team achieved outstanding results at the 2026 European Wrestling Championships held in Tirana, finishing first in the medal standings. Ukraine earned 11 medals in total: six gold, one silver, and four bronze.

The restoration of Russia and Belarus in wrestling, as well as in other sports, could significantly reshape international sports policy and cross-country relations. This move has sparked mixed reactions within the sports community, particularly among nations that continue to oppose the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in international events. At the same time, Ukraine's success at the European Championships highlights the importance of supporting and developing national sports amid global competition. Each of these developments has the potential to drive further changes on the world sports stage.

The recent decision by UWW to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete under their national flags has sparked a significant response within the international sports community. This move follows a series of controversial reinstatements, including the recent protests from Ukraine's Olympic Committee against the IOC's stance on Belarus. Such developments highlight the ongoing tensions and complexities surrounding international sports policies in the wake of geopolitical conflicts.
