Unveiling of the 'Reconstruction of Events' Installation

A major new art piece titled 'Reconstruction of Events' was unveiled in Uzhhorod on March 27. The 7.5-meter-tall installation is the work of artist Mykhailo Deiaka, who developed the concept following his visits to the front lines and conversations with military personnel. The creative process for this significant work spanned the years 2024 and 2025.

The artist explicitly emphasized that the project was entirely funded by private collectors who support his work, with no public money used.

“How much did it cost and how much public funding was used? Not a single penny of public funds was spent. It was financed by collectors who collect my art. Completely. 100%,” stated Mykhailo Deiaka.
This model of private patronage for major public art is noteworthy in the current Ukrainian context.

The Installation's Significance for Contemporary Ukrainian Society

'Reconstruction of Events' carries a profound meaning connected to the memory of war. As the author stressed, it is 'a project of memory, about what is happening around us and what lives in our memory; the events of war are different for everyone. For the guys who are defending us – they have one image. For people living under shelling – they have their own reconstruction of these events.'

The unveiling attracted considerable interest from Uzhhorod residents and visitors. Many Ukrainians noted the importance of such artistic expression during wartime and its value for preserving the memory of events that have changed countless lives. The artist, in turn, invites all interested to visit the installation and experience its emotional impact firsthand.

The 'Reconstruction of Events' installation is a significant cultural phenomenon that underscores the role of war memory in modern Ukrainian society. It encourages reflection on the diverse experiences of people within the context of war and highlights the importance of art as a means of expressing emotions and trauma. Projects like this can foster dialogue between different segments of the population, promoting a deeper understanding of the complex realities the country faces.

In addition to large-scale installations, personal initiatives also play a vital role in preserving the memory of war. A remarkable example is a young boy who, since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion, has curated a museum showcasing over 600 artifacts related to the conflict. This story highlights how individual efforts contribute to the collective remembrance of wartime experiences. To learn more about this inspiring project, visit a 13-year-old's war museum.
