The level of wages in European countries varies significantly, and nominal figures do not always reflect the real living possibilities. When choosing a country to work in, it is important to consider not only the salary but also expenses and purchasing power. About this writes Visit Ukraine.

The European labor market creates different conditions for workers depending on the economy, employment structure, and social standards. That is why the difference in income in individual states can reach several times.

Salaries in Europe: countries with the highest incomes

The leader in terms of average salaries in the EU remains Luxembourg — annual incomes here are almost twice the average figure across the Union. High earnings are also offered by Denmark, Ireland, Belgium, Austria, and Germany. In these countries, average annual salaries exceed 50 thousand euros thanks to developed financial, technological, and industrial sectors.

Salaries in Europe: where the lowest earnings are and why

The lowest incomes are recorded in Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, and a number of countries in Southeast and Central Europe. Here average salaries significantly lag behind Western European ones due to lower labor productivity, weaker development of high-tech industries, and a smaller influence of trade unions.

Experts emphasize that a high salary does not always guarantee a better quality of life. The cost of housing, transport, food, and taxes often 'consume' a significant portion of income. When evaluating purchasing power, the gap between countries becomes less pronounced, and some countries with lower nominal salaries appear more attractive for living and working.

Let us remind you, in Poland from June 2026, new requirements for employers regarding salary payments will come into force.
