Researchers uncover hints of early farming in Australia's native millet

A legacy of Indigenous land stewardship

Wild channel millet in Australia has yielded new clues about early plant domestication. In a study published on August 4 at 7:00 PM, researchers analyzed this grass—which can stand over a meter tall on the plains of Queensland—and found intriguing genetic and evolutionary features. The Mitaka people, who have lived in these areas for millennia, are descendants of networks that once moved plants across the entire continent.

Researchers found that each chromosome in the millet exists in 12 copies, a condition known as polyploidy. Normally, only two copies are present. This extra genetic material helps the plant cope with desert extremes, and enables seeds to lie dormant underground for long periods before sprouting rapidly after heavy rains.

The team also observed that the seeds hold tightly to the stem rather than falling off easily—a trait associated with domesticated cereals like wheat and maize. They believe that thousands of years of harvesting, storage, and consumption by human communities may have pushed the plant toward this characteristic. Further investigations are planned to obtain direct proof of that process.

This study not only adds scientific knowledge but reinforces the importance of Aboriginal traditional knowledge: these groups were already putting the plant to use many generations ago. The findings also have broader implications for appreciating Australia's Indigenous cultural heritage.

How traditional communities handled plants can offer lessons for modern biodiversity conservation and sustainable farming practices. Additional research could show how ancient agricultural approaches can be adapted to a changing climate. It serves as another reminder of the sophistication of pre-colonial land management.
