Air quality is deteriorating again in Kyiv: where it is hard to breathe in the capital

Погіршення повітря в Києві: де дихати важче за все.

On September 1, an average level of air pollution was recorded in Kyiv. This is reported by the Kyiv City State Administration, referencing the Department of Environmental Protection and Adaptation to Climate Change of the KCSA.

According to city authorities, the pollution level on the right bank of the Dnipro is assessed as average. At the same time, in some areas on the left bank, it is elevated. The radiation background in Kyiv is normal.

Right bank:

  • European Union Ave. 64-G – the overall air quality index is 69 (average level);
  • Shchuseva St. 20 – 75 (average level);
  • Turivska St. 28 – 59 (average level);
  • Beresteyskyi Ave. 55 (average level);
  • Kytaivska St. 22 – 55 (average level).

Left bank:

  • Kharkiv Highway 7/1 – 63 (average level);
  • Architect Verbitsky St. 26 – 75 (high level).

According to KCSA data, a probable cause of the increasing pollution level is the meteorological conditions that promote the accumulation and retention of harmful impurities in the ground air layer. Specifically, low wind speed affects the pollution level.

Until the situation improves, residents of Kyiv are advised to:

  • close windows;
  • limit time spent outdoors;
  • drink more water;
  • use air purifiers if possible.

The overall air quality index (CAQI, Common Air Quality Index) is automatically generated based on the indicators of several main pollutants: PM2.5 and PM10 (particulate matter), SO2 (sulfur dioxide), NO2 (nitrogen dioxide), O3 (ground-level ozone), CO (carbon monoxide). The lower the CAQI indicator, the better the air quality.
