Summer 2023 accommodation costs in Odesa

During the summer of 2023, hotel rates in the city sparked outrage among visitors. For instance, a seven-night stay at the NEMO Hotel, located on Lanzheron Beach, runs approximately 126,000 hryvnias for a triple room with breakfast included. At the KADORR Hotel, a similar room costs around 82,000 hryvnias. These steep prices have drawn sharp criticism, especially given the ongoing security challenges in the region, which include missile strikes and drone attacks.

Current state of tourism in Odesa

Odesa and its surrounding region remain virtually the only seaside vacation option within Ukraine, due to the tense security environment elsewhere. In response, local authorities plan to expand the number of officially open beaches to six and increase coastal shelters to 19, aiming to improve both safety and the overall visitor experience.

Notably, rental prices in Odesa have climbed significantly, triggering heated discussions on social media. Some comments reflect tourist frustration:

  • 'Egypt or any other war-free resort with the Red Sea or Mediterranean costs the same. This is insane. They could offer reasonable prices for Ukrainians.'
  • 'Thanks, but I’d rather go to Tenerife for two weeks—it’s cheaper, no air raid sirens, and an ocean view.'

Concerns about safety are also evident in the comments:

'And as a bonus, you get a piece of shrapnel in the throat.'
This highlights that despite the appeal of a summer getaway in Odesa, the security situation raises serious doubts for many potential visitors.

The combination of high vacation costs and persistent security risks underscores the difficult choices facing Ukrainian travelers seeking summer alternatives. As interest in overseas destinations grows, Odesa’s authorities are trying to strike a balance between ensuring safety and attracting tourists—a dynamic that could shape future pricing and the region’s popularity. Meanwhile, the social media discourse shows that travelers are actively comparing domestic and international offers, which may push for changes in Ukraine’s tourism policies.

The ongoing security challenges in Odesa have prompted local authorities to enhance the tourism experience, as seen in their plans to increase the number of beaches despite the current situation.
