Early Watermelon Season Kicks Off in Odesa Region

Перші кавуни з’явилися на ринках Одеського регіону.

Odesa Region Welcomes First Watermelons of the Year

The early watermelon season has officially begun in Ukraine's Odesa region, with the first fruits harvested near the town of Tatarbunary. Known as the Luzitana variety, these watermelons were grown under mulch film, which accelerated their ripening process. The news of the season's start was shared by the publication Glavcom, citing a local buyer's TikTok page.

Fruit and Vegetable Market Update

Meanwhile, supermarkets in Kyiv have started mass sales of the first watermelons and melons of the season. At the same time, Ukraine is experiencing a sharp rise in cabbage prices. White cabbage has jumped by over 50%, with producers now selling it for 12 to 20 hryvnias per kilogram—roughly 52% more expensive than at the end of the previous workweek. Farmers attribute the price hike to reduced supply during the seasonal transition period.

As a result, the launch of early watermelons in the Odesa region coincides with rising cabbage costs across Ukraine, a shift that could influence consumer behavior. With cabbage becoming more expensive, shoppers may increasingly turn to more affordable fruits like watermelons and melons. This trend could reshape market dynamics, potentially altering demand for both vegetables and fruit in the near future.

As the early watermelon season unfolds in the Odesa region, consumers in Kyiv are also starting to see the first waves of watermelons and melons hitting the market, with prices reaching as high as 129 UAH per kilo. This surge in fruit availability contrasts sharply with the soaring cabbage prices, making it essential for shoppers to stay informed about the changing dynamics in the produce market.
