Family Rift Over War: Khostikoyev Speaks Out

Vyacheslav Khostikoyev, a Ukrainian actor, has addressed a painful family conflict sparked by the war, involving his cousin Antonina Papernaya, who now lives in Russia. He last spoke with Papernaya before the full-scale invasion began, and while he cherishes warm memories of their shared childhood, he acknowledges that the situation is complicated by the conflict and her career in the aggressor country.

Antonina Papernaya was born on June 1, 1990, in Kyiv to famous actress Olga Sumska and actor Yevgen Paperny. She moved to Russia before the full-scale war started, graduated from the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute in 2015, and began her career at the First Studio of the Yevgeny Vakhtangov Theatre. After 2022, she continued working in Russia. Since 2015, she has been in a relationship with Russian actor Vladimir Yaglych, with whom she is raising a daughter, Eva (born 2017), and a son, Danylo (born 2020). Since the full-scale invasion began, Antonina has not made any public statements condemning Russia's aggression.

Khostikoyev's Emotions and Hopes

Vyacheslav Khostikoyev shared his feelings about the situation, noting that it is 'painful' to come to terms with the consequences of the war. He expressed a desire to see his sister again:

“I would very much like to see her” - Vyacheslav Khostikoyev

Although his connection with Papernaya is currently limited, he holds onto fond childhood memories of her. 'I just hope for her understanding,' Khostikoyev said, emphasizing that the door to his heart will always remain open for her.

The actor acknowledged that Papernaya's life in Russia is tied to her career, stating:

“Look, she is living her life there. And like any actor, she is trying to do something to earn money and advance her career” - Vyacheslav Khostikoyev

Khostikoyev does not judge his sister's stance, as 'I don’t know the circumstances' that led to her choices. He also stressed the importance of dialogue in resolving their differences: 'To understand this, you have to hear her side too.'

Vyacheslav Khostikoyev dreams of meeting his sister in Ukrainian Crimea, where they once vacationed together at the Artek camp. 'The ideal for me would be to meet in Ukrainian Crimea, on those same rocks where Artek used to be,' the actor said, expressing hope for a chance to talk and discuss everything that has happened in recent years.

This situation highlights the complex emotional and social toll of the war, which has affected many Ukrainian families. Personal conflicts, like the rift between Khostikoyev and Papernaya, mirror the broader divisions in society caused by the conflict. Stories of individual pain thus become part of the collective memory and experience shaping the new reality for Ukrainians navigating these challenges on multiple levels.
