Appeal Court Upholds Asset Forfeiture

The Appeals Chamber of Ukraine's High Anti-Corruption Court (HACC) has upheld a lower court's ruling to confiscate 8.5 million hryvnias in assets from the family of public officials. This decision is part of Ukraine's ongoing judicial reforms aimed at combating illicit enrichment. The assets, acquired in 2021, were registered under a close relative of the officials.

The court ruled that the assets of a married couple, both customs officers at the Odesa Customs office, and their son, a deputy head of a district council in the Kyiv region, were unjustified and ordered them forfeited to the state. The ruling was based on lifestyle monitoring conducted by the National Agency on Corruption Prevention (NACP).

Seized Property and Vehicle

In 2021, the couple purchased a 103.8 square meter apartment in Odesa, while their son acquired a 105.5 square meter apartment in Kyiv. The son also became the owner of a 2018 TOYOTA RAV-4 HYBRID vehicle. All these assets were registered under a relative born in 1937, which formed the legal basis for the confiscation. Such asset concealment is a common tactic investigated by anti-corruption bodies.

This ruling marks a significant step in Ukraine's fight against corruption and demonstrates the judicial system's focus on restoring justice. The confiscation of assets linked to corrupt activities underscores the necessity for transparency in the conduct of public officials and their families. Cases like this set a precedent, confirming that illicit gains will not go unpunished.
