Researchers from the Institute for Economic Research (ifo) stated that watching films and series in their original language with subtitles can significantly improve foreign language proficiency. According to a study conducted in Munich, this method helps viewers enhance their language skills, while dubbing, on the contrary, does not provide such an effect.
By comparing countries that use subtitles instead of dubbing, researchers found that they have higher English language proficiency levels. Information from 36 European countries and test results confirmed this conclusion.
«Language can be learned not only in school but also in everyday life. Using subtitles is a simple and accessible way to improve English proficiency without much effort,» explained one of the study participants.
