On July 22, 2026, a scientific report detailing an ambitious plan to terraform Mars was released. This initiative seeks to raise the planet's temperature by 30 degrees using artificial aerosols or greenhouse gases. The goal is to enable liquid water to exist on the Martian surface, a critical prerequisite for sustaining life. For context, Mars currently has an average temperature of about -80 degrees Fahrenheit, making such a shift a monumental challenge.

Initial Steps of the Plan

The first phase involves boosting the average temperature on the Red Planet by roughly 30 degrees. Following this, researchers propose sending specially engineered microorganisms to Mars, based on extremophiles—bacteria that thrive in Earth's most hostile environments. These microbes could facilitate photosynthesis and alter the planet's atmosphere, gradually building up oxygen levels.

However, achieving sufficient oxygen concentrations might take around a thousand years. Until then, scientists predict that humans would likely reside in large domes equipped with artificial oxygen production. Other unknowns in this plan include:

  • the presence of hidden thick ice layers on Mars;
  • how dust storms might evolve after warming;
  • whether the planet has enough resources for large-scale oxygen generation;
  • the risk of destroying potential traces of ancient or current Martian life.

This scientific report underscores the boldness of humanity's efforts to colonize other planets, particularly Mars. If successful, the plan could spur further research and development in interplanetary missions, reshaping our understanding of life beyond Earth. At the same time, executing such a massive project requires addressing numerous ethical and scientific questions that remain pressing for researchers.
